Electronics Mechanic

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. To be found at least minimally qualified for the position of Electronic Mechanics WG-10 level, your application and supporting documents must demonstrate the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for satisfactory job performance. For this position, you must have the ability to do the work without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties. Examples of qualifying related experience include: install, repair, remove, modify, align, calibrate, overhaul and perform preventive maintenance on systems and equipment (ex. Auto Guided Vehicle, pneumatic trash system, automatic doors, fire alarm system, security systems); troubleshoot malfunctions of electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems; utilize test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, voltmeter, ohmmeter, laser and fire control test sets; and read schematics, work orders, shop drawings, and blueprints specific to work assignments. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Electronics Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Ingenuity Test Equipment – Electronics Troubleshooting (Electronic Equipment) Use Hand and Power Tools – Electronics Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. The work is active, frequently requiring physical effort in lifting up to 35 pounds without assistance and over 50 pounds with assistance from other workers or weight handling equipment. Work assignments involve frequent standing, sitting, climbing of ladders, bending and working in cramped and awkward positions. Working Conditions: The work is primarily indoors in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated shop area or building, but at times can be subjected to inclement weather conditions. Occasionally, the incumbent is exposed to the possibility of burns, cuts, electric shock, falls from a ladder and other normal hazards associated with working around machinery and confined spaces. Normal tour of duty will be a rotating shift between 5 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., including weekends, or as required to support facility services.
This position is located at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System within the Facilities Management service line. This is a Journeyman level position. Journeyman level automatic transport mechanic duties include monitoring, maintenance, and repair on assigned systems, performing complex tasks independently. System maintenance is of the utmost importance with detailed attention to alignment, calibration, lubrication and adjustment to assure full systems capabilities at all times.
