About the Role
This Staff Accountant position supports the transactional and operational accounting activities required to keep financial records accurate, complete, and current. The role focuses on accounts payable, month-end and quarterly close activities, reconciliations, expense administration, annual compliance support, and day-to-day financial operations.
This is an entry-to-mid-level opportunity for a detail-oriented accounting professional who wants broad exposure to nonprofit accounting operations. The Staff Accountant will join a growing Finance team and report directly to the Controller.
The Finance team is expanding to support significant organizational growth and to build a strong in-house accounting function. This role will help establish reliable foundational processes as accounting responsibilities transition from outside contractors to an internal team.
What You’ll Do
- Own accounts payable and employee expense processes: Manage invoice processing, vendor relationships, credit card program administration, and employee expense reimbursements while ensuring accurate coding and compliance with expense policies.
- Support month-end and quarterly close: Help record journal entries related to payroll, benefits, credit card activity, employee expenses, prepaid expenses, and accruals.
- Perform and improve monthly bank reconciliations: Own the execution of the monthly bank reconciliation process and identify opportunities to make the process more efficient over time.
- Respond to finance-related staff questions: Serve as the first point of contact within Finance for incoming staff questions and concerns, triaging requests and providing timely, accurate responses.
- Support annual compliance processes: Assist with the annual audit and Form 990 preparation in collaboration with the Controller and Senior Accountant.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of financial or accounting experience, including accounting, accounts payable, or a related finance role.
- Strong foundational understanding of debits, credits, and how accounting records work.
- Experience using common accounting and financial systems. Current systems include Sage Intacct, Salesforce, and Bill.com.
- Experience supporting financial audits and annual compliance processes such as Form 990 preparation.
- Experience with accounts payable processes, including invoice processing, vendor management, and employee expense reimbursements.
- Strong Excel skills, including formulas, filters, and pivot tables.
- Excellent organizational skills with a meticulous approach to preparing, documenting, and tracking work.
- Strong attention to detail and a consistent commitment to accuracy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and appropriately.
- Experience with or interest in process improvement, including identifying ways to make accounting workflows more efficient and effective.

Remote Work
- This position is eligible to work fully remotely from anywhere in the United States.
- Only U.S.-based candidates are being considered for this role.
- Physical offices are available in Oakland, California, and Brooklyn, New York, but working from an office is optional.
- Relocation expenses are available for candidates who choose to relocate to either physical office location.
- Flexible working arrangements are supported, including flexible hours, remote work, and optional office-based work.
Travel
- Participation in two in-person Visit Weeks each year at the Oakland, California office is important to fulfilling the goals of the role.
- The position may also involve up to two departmental retreats per year.
- Occasional additional travel may be helpful for conferences or recruiting events.
