This remote opportunity is designed for an experienced database professional who enjoys solving complex technical problems, automating repetitive work, and supporting customers across diverse cloud environments.
The Database Administrator Cloud will provide advanced remote database administration services to customers around the world. The role includes monitoring database environments, improving performance and reliability, resolving incidents, supporting architecture decisions, implementing best practices, performing upgrades, managing backups, assisting with recoveries, and handling other database administration responsibilities as needed.
This position is part of a globally distributed virtual team that works through email, Slack, web-based systems, SSH, and other remote collaboration technologies. The successful candidate should be self-motivated, comfortable working independently, and capable of managing technical priorities in a fully remote environment.
What You’ll Do
- Perform remote database administration activities for customers located around the world.
- Monitor database environments and identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, durability, and availability.
- Investigate and resolve database incidents using advanced troubleshooting and creative problem-solving skills.
- Provide recommendations related to database configuration, architecture, performance, and operational best practices.
- Help design new database architectures and support the implementation of approved solutions.
- Perform database upgrades and related maintenance activities.
- Configure, monitor, and maintain database backup processes.
- Assist with database recovery activities when required.
- Automate repetitive database administration tasks.
- Configure monitoring tools and related services on customer servers.
- Conduct periodic system health checks and prepare reports on database environments.
- Manage cloud database customers across multiple cloud environments.
- Help develop database administration tools, utilities, and platform enhancements.
- Improve shared practices, procedures, and methodologies used by the remote database administration team.
- Participate in technical community activities, including blogging and social media contributions.
- Provide coverage during the designated work schedule.
- Participate in an on-call rotation as needed to support customer service-level agreements.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Strong commitment to customer service and solving complex technical problems.
- Experience working with MariaDB, MySQL, and related database tools.
- Knowledge of SQL query development, analysis, and optimization.
- Knowledge of database design, administration, development, or architecture.
- Understanding of high-availability database environments and related technologies.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Consistent follow-through when communicating with customers and resolving technical issues.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in a remote environment.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
- Experience with a columnar database platform.
- Experience using database proxy technologies.
- Comfort working remotely using company-provided equipment.
Preferred Experience and Skills
- Experience supporting technical systems in a 24/7 environment.
- Experience with multiple backup utilities, including mydumper, MariaDB Backup, XtraBackup, mysqldump, or similar tools.
- Previous experience in a MariaDB, Percona, or MySQL support engineering role.
- Previous experience working as part of a fully remote or globally distributed team.
- Proficiency in one or more scripting languages, such as Bash, Python, or Go.
- System administration experience with Linux, Windows, or similar operating systems.
- Working knowledge of additional database platforms, including Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Amazon RDS or Aurora, MongoDB, or similar systems.
- Contributions to open-source software within the MariaDB or MySQL ecosystem.
- Experience with database technologies such as MaxScale, ColumnStore, Galera Cluster, or Clustrix.
- Experience with virtualization platforms such as Xen, VirtualBox, or VMware.
- Experience working with public or private cloud platforms.
- Experience with infrastructure or database automation toolsets.
- Experience with containers and orchestration technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience using MariaDB or MySQL monitoring software.
- MariaDB or MySQL certifications.
Schedule and Travel
- The preferred work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday.
- Other flexible schedules that provide weekend coverage may also be considered.
- Because customers receive coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year, occasional work during nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.
- The globally distributed team structure is used to reduce the frequency and impact of after-hours coverage.
- International travel may be required for company-related meetings.
