General experience is defined as: progressively responsible clerical, office, automation, or other work that indicates the ability to perform the duties of an office automation clerk. Examples of general experience include: producing, storing, retrieving, and printing documents using word processing software; data entry; answering office telephones and referring calls to appropriate staff; sorting, filing and retrieving materials; operating a copying machine; collating and stapling materials. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in an accredited business, secretarial, or technical school. Combining Education and Experience: Successfully completed education above the high school level and general experience may be combined to meet the qualification requirements at the GS-04 grade level. To determine if you qualify based on a combination of education and experience, first determine your education as a percentage (e.g., 30 semester hours divided by 60 equals 50%); then determine your experience as a percentage (e.g., 6 months general experience divided by 12 equals 50%); finally, add the two percentages and if the total equals 100% or more, you qualify (e.g., 50% + 50% = 100%). To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
