Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1015-12. Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal GS-11 level, designing armatures for a museum or cultural institution. Armature Design – Skill in designing, fabricating and installing armatures. Exhibition Design – Ability to coordinate, plan, and design layouts for exhibitions. Communication – Knowledge of communication techniques and strategies to provide expert consultation to other professionals. “Experience” refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The primary purpose of the work in this position is to fabricate and install mounts and armatures for art works in the National Gallery’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions (60%), and to plan and design exhibition layouts (40%). Effective project planning, management and exacting quality control in the fabrication and installation of mounts are essential to the timely completion of work to meet deadlines and safeguard National Gallery collections and loans.
