EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Driver’s License: A current, valid state-issued Driver’s License is required for this position. Physical Requirements: The incumbent must move and control powered equipment, ladders, or scaffolds, and is periodically required to work from ladders or scaffolding. He/she must move heavy furniture and loaded carts, and be capable of continually standing, stooping, and reaching. He/she will frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Working Conditions: Due to the nature of the tasks, work may be indoors, and/or outdoors, occasionally during inclement weather, involving exposure to temperature extremes. Working conditions may be dirty and dusty. The tools, equipment, and heavy objects involved occasionally present chances of serious injury. The incumbent may be exposed to vibration from powered equipment; to skin irritation from strong chemicals used in cleaning or sanitizing solutions; to possible infections as a result of working in areas where a high concentration of harmful microbes may be present; and to injuries from falls. He/she will operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.
This position is a Maintenance Worker/Locksmith in the Facilities Management Service at the Iowa City VA Medical Center. The incumbent will perform a variety of repairs, maintenance and preventive maintenance tasks throughout the medical center. He/ She is responsible for handling all minor maintenance and repair work on systems, structure, and equipment which can be accomplished within 30 minutes.
