To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): For positions at GS-4 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR Education and Training; For GS-4: Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year’s duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for GS-3; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. Minimum Qualifications: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. GS-04: 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 to qualify for the GS-04. Examples Include: a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or b) technical support work in a closely related field that required application of the methods and techniques for the position of Medical Technician.. OR 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation GS-05: One year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Experience includes technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position of Medical Technician OR Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with major study of at least 24 semester hours in subjects such as Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Banking, and Microbiology. GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Experience includes (1) performing calibration, preventative maintenance and diagnostic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment; (2) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position of Medical Technician GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Experience includes (1) performing calibration, preventative maintenance and diagnostic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment; (2) preparing solutions, stains, reagents and media required for performing tests and examinations; (3) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position of Medical Technician. OR One year of graduate education in clinical laboratory science or a related field.General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Serves as a Medical Technician in the Clinical Laboratory with duties to provide a variety of clinical laboratory services by performing standardized tests and examinations of human tissues, fluids and/or other substances, work encompasses the specialized areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Banking and Urinalysis.
