GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training demonstrating very basic working knowledge of the properties and characteristics of a number of composite and plastic bonding agents, such as fiberglass, Kevlar, PVC, graphite, film adhesive, silicones, epoxies, etc. and Low Observable (LO) material characteristics; a very basic working knowledge of sheet metal theory, methods and practices; knowledge of very basic shop mathematics to calculate proportions and amount of materials required in repairing or modifying components; knowledge of and skill in the use of basic hand and powered tools common to the bonding operations as well as those utilized in the sheet metal trade; knowledge of health hazards associated with maintenance as well as proper mitigation procedures i.e. PPE, decontamination, and housekeeping; and ability to learn new skills and apply them to work in this series. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have 12 months experience or training demonstrating a working knowledge of the properties and characteristics of a number of composite and plastic bonding agents, such as fiberglass, Kevlar, PVC, graphite, film adhesive, silicones, epoxies, etc. and LO material characteristics; working knowledge of sheet metal theory, methods and practices; knowledge of basic shop mathematics to calculate proportions and amount of materials required in repairing or modifying components; knowledge of and skill in the use of basic hand and powered tools common to the bonding operations as well as those utilized in the sheet metal trade; knowledge of health hazards associated with maintenance as well as proper mitigation procedures i.e. PPE, decontamination, and housekeeping; ability to examine parts and items to locate defects; estimate the amount of adhesive filler needed for a repair by approximating the depth, length, and width of the damaged area in inches and then estimating the amount of filler in grams; ability to repair irregularly shaped LO and composite materials that have been damaged; ability to bond LO material, composites, and metals. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works long periods of time exerting self when bending, shaping, or constructing complex items. Duties regularly require extended periods of walking, climbing, standing, or bending while performing inspections or tedious repetitive maintenance tasks. Work may require prolonged tiring and uncomfortable positions. The worker may be required to lift heavy equipment and components weighing up to 50 pounds and with assistance up to 100 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work performed is conducted in a typical aircraft maintenance facility. Periodic outside work is required to be performed on an active aircraft flight line without fall protection, subject to exposure to elements of weather. The individual is frequently exposed to potentially dangerous environments to include operating engines, hazardous noise, stored energy, RF radiation, and hazardous chemicals. The use of appropriate clothing or personal protective equipment and strict adherence to work procedures is required to safely perform maintenance duties. Wear of full-face respirators, protective suits, rubber gloves, hearing protection, and other PPE is required. Wear of steel-toed boots is mandatory. Incumbent works with hazardous/toxic chemical products such as paints, solvents, strippers, and adhesives, creating hazardous/flammable wastes and dust. Maintains compliance with established performance and safety standards and recommends work stoppage when hazards exceed the typical work environment. The worker is subject to any shift and irregular tours of duty. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & NOTES: 1. Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position. 2. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position. 3. MILITARY TECHNICIAN COMPATIBILITY POSITION: Prior to placement in this position, the selected applicant must be assigned to an appropriate military position and must meet the definition of a dual status technician in accordance with 32 U S C 709.
