Physical Effort: The work of this position requires kneeling, bending, stooping, climbing, and standing on hard surfaces for long periods of time; the use of hand-trucks and other types of material handling equipment to move, load, and unload large drums and various size containers from trucks and containment areas; frequent lifting, moving, carrying, and loading of items and equipment that weigh up 40 pounds; and occasional lifting and movement of items weighing in excess of 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment and/or with the assistance of other workers. Working Conditions: Work is done inside or outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Materials handlers are regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapers, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. The incumbent does the hands on work of collecting and moving all categories of waste (Hazardous, Regulated Medical, Trace Chemotherapy, Controlled Drugs, Non-hazardous Drugs, Solid Waste and Recyclables). The work involves the safe and legal containment of hazardous wastes such as mercury and cytoplastic. The incumbent is trained in the purpose and use of protective equipment.
