Maintenance Worker

Job Element 1: Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. Job Element 2: Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). Job Element 3: Use of measuring instruments. Job Element 4: Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprinting reading). Job Element 5: Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Job Element 6: Knowledge of maintenance work related to maintaining grounds, building, and exterior structures. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. Physical Demands: Position requires extensive physical activity in an outdoor environment. Physical effort can be considerable lifting up to 90 lbs. (bricks, stone, mortar, and cement, wheelbarrows of heavy materials, sand and lumber). The work requires walking, standing, stooping, bending, climbing, kneeling, lying flat and repeated lifting. The incumbent must have good vision, reaction reflexes and depth perception. Physical demands require coordination for hand, eye and body. Must climb ladders, scaffolding and on to roofs. Inside buildings, some systems or work may be in hard-to-reach places. Work oftentimes requires working long periods of time in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Strenuous physical effort is required when handling heaving and bulky materials such as sheets of plywood, framing members, and other building and construction materials. Work requires manual dexterity and mechanical aptitudes. The incumbent is subject to continued safety training and is required to follow established safety and environmental health procedures and practices Work Environment: Work is performed in all kinds of environments from an office setting to project sites in rough and steep terrain. Field work involves vehicular and foot access and may involve accessing remote areas. Temperatures may range from near zero to over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather may include periods of rain, snow and heavy winds. Wearing of the authorized BLM uniform is required during field work, and weekend work will also be required. Some work is on steep uneven rocky mountainous terrain. Incumbent is expected to use and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and devices such as earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, steel-toed boots, flash shield and eye goggles to minimize risks while working with noisy equipment, using power and hand tools, when using chemicals and paints in cleaning and other maintenance and construction activities. There is exposure to dirt, dust, sawdust, fuel, machinery noise, grease, fumes, smoke, noise, vibration, mud, and ice. Clothing and skin will become dirty, muddy, and greasy. There is occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones, scrapes, cuts, burns, electrical shock, eye damage and infections. Welding involves exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiations, heat, flying sparks, glare of torches and heated materials, sharp points and the possibility of eye injury and burns. The incumbent will wear proper protective clothing and devices such as earplugs, welding helmet, gloves and steel toed boots. Welding also includes work in awkward or cramped positions to get to hard to reach places. Work involves some duties that put the incumbent in proximity of noxious gases and fumes for example, in painting, plumbing and welding, etc. It is expected that incumbent will wear PPE such as respirators while conducting these tasks and use positive ventilation to reduce risk. Construction work sometimes involves working high above ground level. It is expected that PPE will be worn during these activities. May be required to work irregular work schedules, weekends and holidays.
