Translator (Recent Graduate)

Degree Requirements: This appointment will be made under the Pathways Recent Graduate hiring authority. To be eligible an applicant must have received a qualifying degree within 2 years of applying for employment under this authority. Note: For applicants who have completed a degree and have an intervening period of obligated service in the uniformed services, the 2-year eligibility period begins on the date of the applicant’s discharge or release from the uniformed service. The eligibility period for veterans must be within 6 years of degree completion. Individuals are eligible to apply to the Recent Graduates Program up to nine (9) months prior to completing their education requirements but are required to meet eligibility requirements by the appointment date. AND Minimum Qualifications: GS-09: To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level, which must include the following experience: translating/interpreting, (specifically English to Spanish); or a combination of work (that required English to Spanish) and training at the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Service Institute, or comparable training. The following are examples of work in the required language that may have provided the required abilities: translating/interpreting biomedical, science, and health communication materials from English to Spanish (in this specific language combination); producing accurate and culturally appropriate translations of technical and non-technical vocabulary following current language conventions (i.e., correct grammar, syntax, and spelling); using industry-standard translation software (i.e. Trados Studio) that includes the use of translation memories and Termbases; professional experience in translation coordination. OR Have completed a master’s or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in the appropriate foreign language from an English-speaking college or university, English from a college or university in the other country or translating or interpreting where English and the foreign language were prerequisites. OR Have completed 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in the appropriate foreign language from an English-speaking college or university, English from a college or university in the other country or translating or interpreting where English and the foreign language were prerequisites; or LL.B. or J.D., if related to the position. OR Have a combination of post-secondary education and specialized experience that together meets 100% of the qualification requirement for this position. GS-11: To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level, which must include the following experience: translating, interpreting (specifically English to Spanish); or a combination of work (that required English to Spanish) and training at the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Service Institute, or comparable training. The following are examples of work in the required language that may have provided the required abilities: translating/interpreting biomedical, science, and health communication materials from English to Spanish (in this specific language combination); producing accurate and culturally appropriate translations of technical and non-technical vocabulary following current language conventions (i.e., correct grammar, syntax, and spelling); using industry-standard translation software (i.e. Trados Studio) that includes the use of translation memories and Termbases. OR Have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree with a major study in the appropriate foreign language from an English-speaking college or university, English from a college or university in the other country or translating or interpreting where English and the foreign language were prerequisites. OR Have completed 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in the appropriate foreign language from an English-speaking college or university, English from a college or university in the other country or translating or interpreting where English and the foreign language were prerequisites; or LL.M., if related to the position. OR Have a combination of post-secondary education and specialized experience that together meets 100% of the qualification requirement for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are special qualification requirements in addition to the minimum requirements, that are essential to successfully perform the duties of this job. If the SPF is not documented in your resume and occupational questionnaire, you will be screened-out and will not receive further consideration under this announcement. Applicants must be proficient in Spanish and English (speak, read and write). The interview will be conducted in Spanish and English, and you will be required to translate biomedical science and health documents from English to Spanish. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management’s discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
