To qualify for this WG-10 MAINTENANCE MECHANIC position you must demonstrate: (1) the Screen Out AND (2) the six individual Job Elements SCREEN OUT – ABILITY TO DO MAINTENANCE MECHANIC WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION REQUIREMENT: Performs a variety of tasks involving the upkeep of buildings, grounds, fixtures and utilities. The position involves the visual examination and repair of systems using experience in the areas of carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical and grounds operations. You must demonstrate fundamental knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to perform work in these trades. At a minimum, your work must not require more than regular spot checks or guidance during progress and upon completion. (2) JOB ELEMENTS: Describe duties you perform that show you have (at a minimum): — fundamental knowledge of equipment required for common carpentry, plumbing and electrical work — ability to apply Maintenance Mechanic technical practices to perform common carpentry, plumbing and electrical tasks — ability to use conventional measuring instruments to perform common carpentry, plumbing and electrical work — ability to read and interpret basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical instructions and complete common Maintenance Mechanic projects — regular hands-on use of conventional carpentry, plumbing and electrical tools — ability to determine the materials needed to complete common carpentry, plumbing and electrical work YOUR RESUME MUST SPECIFICALLY ADDRESS THE SCREEN OUT AND JOB ELEMENTS FOR THIS POSITION. CONDITIONS OF POSITION: Due to the nature of work in this position, the following conditions are essential for successful performance, and you must fully comply with these conditions to meet performance requirements. Successful performance of work in this position and adherence to these conditions will be assessed during the 1-year probationary period that may be served by new appointees (e.g., new to SSA and/or new to this series). This is an emergency / mission-critical position. You may be called to work after-hours, on weekends and holidays. This position is not authorized for telework. (1) Some work is completed inside where Maintenance Mechanics are subject to cuts and danger from flying splinters or chips. (2) Shop work also subjects Maintenance Mechanics to dust and dirt in the air. (3) You may be required to work outside where protection from adverse weather conditions is limited (4) You may also be required to work in confined spaces, on scaffolding, high ladders or on roof tops. (5) You will be required to understand and follow mandated safety procedures and wear mandated safety gear, including safety glasses, steel toed boots, gloves, respirator, etc and any other gear required by the supervisor. You may be required to wear a respirator and may be required to shave to ensure a proper fit. (6) You may be required to report to work or remain at work to perform critical services when other employees are generally excused for all or part of a workday because of hazardous weather or other emergency situations. (7) In case of snow, you may be required to report during irregular hours or travel in hazardous weather conditions. (8) Maintenance Mechanics are on call 24-hours a day, 7-days a weeks and/or according to rotational schedules.
