SUPERVISORY RESEARCH AND WRITING SPECIALIST

In order to qualify, you must meet the basic requirement and specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions: Individual Occupation Requirements (IOR) for General Education and Training Series 1701 and Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Professional and Scientific Positions. BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year degree that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in federal service or equivalent in other pay systems which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is experience which may have been gained while planning, organizing, performing professional-level research, writing, and editorial duties of complex documents and publications; and advising on the principles of academic research, professional writing and editing and educational methodology as it is applied to the design, development and production of manuscripts for formal publications. To view additional qualification information, click on the following link: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/1700/general-education-and-training-series-1701/ KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge in a wide range of techniques, methods, sources, and procedures within the field of research, writing and editing formal, scholarly publications to include the use of finding aids appropriate to traditional and on-line library/archives, standard word usage, syntax, parallel construction, transition, and sentence structure Knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures Ability to plan, organize, and direct the functions and staff of a small to medium sized organization Skill and ability in effective written and oral communication for preparing manuscripts for formal publication and exchanging information with a wide variety of personnel so that others follow instructions, consider recommendations, and cooperate to meet deadlines and quality standards Knowledge of relevant subject matter areas and related terminology such as doctrines and strategies related to history, leadership, logistics, development and technology, international relations, and current events as needed to understand projects and establish rapport with authors Knowledge of the objectives and goals of the organization, as needed, to plan and develop instructional materials PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a first level supervisor, providing planning, directing, organizing, and exercising control over nonsupervisory employees assigned to the Air Force Research Institute (AFRI), Outreach and Journals Division, Publications Production and Projects Editing Branch and to perform professional-level research, writing, and editorial duties.
