In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3800, Metal Work Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) LEADER without more than normal supervision; the ability to lead. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Must be knowledgeable of a wide variety of aircraft components and tools. 2. Must be able to explain and demonstrate established guidelines. Must be able to interpret technical orders and explain how to properly use a variety of chemical compounds and explain technical requirements associated with various types of metals, fiberglass, plastics or other synthetic materials. 3. Ability to lead a work crew in accomplishing the sheet metal repair and associated maintenance activities of the local manufacturing shop. 4. Communicative skills: Must be able to read and speak English. 5. Individual must be able to see, have normal depth perception, walk, and have ability to use both arms, hands, and feet. 6. Must be able to provide quality customer service and be people oriented. Must have good shop work practices to include setting up and maintaining a neat, well-organized work environment. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in shop areas, hangars, and other flight line locations. Individuals will be required to stand, stoop, bend, clin1b, crawl, and work from ladders, scaffolds, and motorized platforms in cramped and hard to reach places. Worker must be able to work at heights above 75 feet and must be able to egress down from these heights in an emergency situation. The work requires frequent lifting, moving, or carrying objects weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Individual must be able to see, have normal depth perception, walk, and have ability to use both arms, hands, and feet. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Work may be performed inside or outside and in poor lighting and ventilation. Constant exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, grease, oils, and hazardous materials are normal with this job. Working conditions in lude the possibility of falls, cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns from steam, and skin, nose, and eye irritation when working with or in close proximity to chemicals. Will be required to wear protective clothing such as aprons, gloves, goggles, boots, hard hats, face shields and respiratory protection devices.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform journeyman duties as a sheet metal mechanic and serve as a working leader with three (3) or more employees in performing quality sheet metal, fiberglass/composite maintenance/repairs on assigned airframes (C-141 Starlifter, C-5 Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster, and KC-135 Strata­Tanker).
