Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Steersman without more than normal supervision. I am skilled in performing daily maintenance checks, transferring fuel from tanks and barges, and making routine operating repairs – Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Reliability and Dependability as a Towboat Operator Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Physical exertion is required in lifting heavy parts, tying up barges, etc. May lift up to 50 pounds or more. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and walking. Incumbent must have color and depth perception and be able to see in low visibility conditions in order to navigate a dredge, tenders, towboats and other vessels. Operating the vessel requires standing for long periods with continual hand and eye coordination. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works around moving machinery and floating plant. Physical exertion is required in lifting heavy parts, tying up barges, etc. Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes of heat and cold and heavy rainfall. There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-shore work may involve working in mud, snow, or ice, in dirty or cramped situations. There is danger of injury as a result of snapping cables and lines moving heavy equipment and lifting heavy anchors. There is exposure to traffic hazards, especially at night.
About the Position: Serves as a Steersman of the M/V Pathfinder under the direct supervision of the Captain in support of the Pathfinders mission as well other District assets to include the Dredge Potter and Grand Tower.
