EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The employee lifts, carries, and handles equipment up to 45 pounds unassisted and over 45 pounds with assistance. Works from ladders, scaffolding platforms, or cramped areas where equipment, parts, or tools are hard to reach. Work requires frequent stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions for long periods. In addition, work involves frequent movement and maneuvering of large, heavy equipment using hoists, holders, and pulleys as required. Working Conditions: The incumbent performs the work under all types of working conditions and may be subject to climbing ladders, to climbing stairs, often in extreme heat and cold. Incumbent must be able to lift and carry heavy objects, work in excessive noise, cramped positions and under stress type conditions. The incumbent must work in isolation rooms and on contaminated equipment. Must on occasion work on live wires, switches, and formers. Incumbent may be exposed to shock hazard at any time while working with electrical equipment and may be exposed to breathing dust, stale and contaminated air that will necessitate wearing an approved respirator. Incumbent is provided safety shoes, eye protection and any other personal protective equipment necessary to the work in the shop. Incumbent is responsible for appropriate use of personal equipment.
This position is located in Engineering Service of the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The Oscar G. Johnson VAMC is a complexity level 3 facility. The primary purpose of this position is to provide general equipment maintenance and repair, including but not limited to industrial and medical equipment. Also works under the direction of journeymen in the completion of duties and tasks in trades such as carpentry, air conditioning equipment, and pipefitting.
