Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-0647 series. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: FOR GS-06: At least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-05) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include performing routine diagnostic or treatment procedures; position patients for examination or treatment; and use advanced medical terminology commonly used in the specialization. FOR GS-07: At least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-06) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include performing specific diagnostic or treatment procedures; recognize the existence of and differences among a few easily recognizable alternatives to position patients for examination or treatment; and use advanced medical terminology commonly used in the specialization. FOR GS-08: At least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-07) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include operating or instructing in the operation of equipment; performing routine and standard diagnostic or treatment procedures, patient instructions, and instrument cleaning and maintenance; adapt the instrument to the patient and/or select procedures based on patients’ physical condition; and respond to emergencies and make recommendations to physicians based on observation of patients’ responses. FOR GS-09: At least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-08) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include full responsibility for technical aspects of the specialization; involves diverse and complex technical problems operating, supervising the operation or instructing in the operation of equipment; patient instructions, and instrument cleaning and maintenance; adapt the instrument to the patient and/or select procedures based on patients’ physical condition; and respond to emergencies and make recommendations to physicians based on observation of patients’ responses. FOR GS-10: At least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-09) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include full responsibility and performance of a variety of specialized diagnostic and treatment procedures and technical aspects of the specialization; involves diverse and complex technical problems, supervising the operation or instructing in the operation of equipment; adapt the instrument to the patient and/or select procedures based on patients’ physical condition; and respond to emergencies and make recommendations to physicians based on observation of patients’ responses. FOR GS-11: At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-10) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include full responsibility and performance of a variety of specialized diagnostic and treatment procedures and technical aspects of the specialization; involves diverse and complex technical problems, supervising the operation or instructing in the operation of equipment; adapt the instrument. In addition to the qualification requirements above, Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements: (1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others. (2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency. Knowledge of basic and commonly used medical equipment, supplies, and procedures sufficient to perform the duties of the position. 2. Knowledge sufficient to prepare and administer commonly prescribed medications, and to recognized adverse medical reactions in patients. 3. Ability to respond to patient emergencies using resuscitative techniques and first aid procedures. 4. Knowledge of various office automation software programs, tools, and techniques to support office operations and produce a variety of documents such as letters, reports, spreadsheets, databases, and graphs. 5. Knowledge of medical terminology to allow communication with the medical staff, understand requests for studies, and report clinical findings from procedures performed. 6. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. 7. Knowledge of medical data generated by patient/equipment connections. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
