Qualifications Reference: EMP-1.7. & OPM General Schedule Qualification Standards – IOR for 1306 job series in conjunction with group standards for professional & scientific positions. https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/1300/health-physics-series-1306/ Basic Requirements for all positions. A) Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR B) Combination of education and experience — courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above in A. In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, applicants must also meet the qualification requirements listed below. FV-H. Education. 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. OR Specialized Experience. At least one year (52 weeks) of specialized equivalent to the FV-G pay band (or FG/GS-5 thru 9 grade level or equivalents in other pay systems) that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the work of the position being filled. Examples may include but are not limited to: applying standard practices of related disciples as they relate to health physics or engineering functions; monitors radon levels or other constituents in well-defined areas; independently selects appropriate methods and procedures to carry out the analyses and tests. FV-I. Specialized Experience. At least one year (52 weeks) of specialized equivalent to the FV-H pay band (or FG/GS-10-12 grade levels or equivalent in other pay systems) that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the work of the position being filled. Examples may include but are not limited to: performing scientific and technical analysis in assessing chemical, biological, radiological effects on operations; collaborating projects and coordinating work with others; developing and presenting technical papers. FV-J. Specialized Experience. At least one year (52 weeks) of specialized equivalent to the FV-I pay band (or FG/GS-13 grade level or equivalent in other pay systems) that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the work of the position being filled. Examples include but are not limited to: providing technical health physics expertise to internal/external customers/stakeholders; reviewing and revising the existing policy guidance directives to ensure compliance applicable to occupational health programs in the aviation/aerospace industry; applies health physics in formulating requirements to integrate new technology into advanced concepts/operations. FV-K. Specialized Experience. At least one year (52 weeks) of specialized equivalent to the FV-J pay band (or FG/GS-14 grade level or equivalent in other pay systems) that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the work of the position being filled. Examples include but are not limited to: developing fundamental approaches and applying broad health physicist expertise to identify adverse health impacts; providing professional and expert technical direction and assessment in all areas of health physics.
