BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT for 0401 Series: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels. A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience–courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT for 1320 Series: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Chemist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. *OR* B. A combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in “A” above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering), including at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent of physics, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above. For GS-14: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in chemistry that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience could include: experience with budget formulation and execution of a ~$5 M research program, including managing the execution of federal appropriated and cyclical funding and competition for and execution of extramural funding agreements; leading research planning efforts to develop controls and management tools of aquatic invasive species; designing and conducting research studies to address current issues in aquatic or terrestrial invasive species management or aquatic toxicology focused on evaluation of fishery management chemicals; developing annual to multi-year science frameworks and research initiatives on large, complex interdisciplinary scales to address diverse questions related to the form, function and processes of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, specifically as it relates to invasive species management and control; coordinating work with other branches/sections, centers/offices, mission areas, Federal and State resource management and regulatory agencies, and university scientists; representing an organization on regional, national and international committees and task forces involving other Federal agencies, State agencies, the academic community, and non-governmental organizations; ensuring research activities are completed in accordance with peer-reviewed study plans and meet appropriate quality, scientific merit and integrity, and are relevant to administration priorities. Salary: $122,198 (Step 01) to $158,860 (Step 10) NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
