Health Tech (Optician)

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/22/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): All applicants must meet this requirement. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR), all applicants must meet the experience or education at the grade level as described below: GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: Knowledge of excellent customer service, communication skills, and multitasking abilities Knowledge of work performed in an optical department Familiarity with medical and optical terminology Knowledge of the patient demographic trends in order to assist with the best eyewear for the individual patient Comprehensive knowledge of the mission, organization, and work processes of healthcare systems in order to efficiently and correctly process glasses orders OR, Education: Successful completion of at least 6 months of graduate education or an internship where it is directly related to the work of the position. **NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-6 level. Combination: Do you have a combination of successfully completed graduate level education AND specialized experience which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level? To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-6. Physical Requirements: The work is mainly sedentary. However, there will be some walking, standing, bending, carrying and lifting of light items such as packages and books, generally of not more than 25 pounds. The Health Technician (Optician) uses optician instruments and equipment to assist Veteran patients with their corrective eye vision needs at the Western New York Healthcare System at Buffalo and Batavia. Applicant in this position should be a New York State licensed Optician.
