NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 3 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. To qualify for this Health Science Specialist, GS 601-11 grade level position, the applicant(s) must possess the Selective Placement Factor, PLUS the Basic Requirement, PLUS at least one of the Additional Qualification requirements, as follows: SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) – A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration. The SPF for this position is: “Knowledge and Experience working and gained within a Medical Research environment.”

BASIC REQUIREMENT (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
PLUS You must possess at least one of the following additional Qualification requirements: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: This position requires one year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience, gained in a medical environment includes function as project manager on research project, conduct complete evaluation of research project operations, develop follow-up procedures to monitor participant progress, monitor project progress and budget requirements, maintain records, and prepare statistical reports, conduct audits of research study records for compliance, and gather statistical and narrative data on projects status. recruiting participants, and managing human research subjects in a research setting. -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Possess the successful completion of Master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.
-OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Combination of Graduate Education and Professional Experience: Possess combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. For example, an applicant with 6 months of appropriate experience equivalent to GS-9 (50 percent of the experience requirement for GS-11) and 27 semester hours of appropriate graduate education (50 percent of the education requirement for GS-11, in excess of that required for GS-9) would be qualified for a GS-11 position (assuming that there is no evidence that the attended college or university requires more than 18 semester hours as equivalent to a year of graduate study). Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of 1 year (excess of 18 semester hours) may be combined with experience. Employee will serve as a Health Science Specialist aligned under the Massachusetts Veterans Epidemiology Research and Information Center (MAVERIC) located at the Veterans Healthcare System in Boston, Massachusetts. The primary purpose of this position is to function as Project Manager, to lead the activities of the research team, and to provide scientific and technical knowledge and support to the research program.
