About the Role
This position works at the intersection of data, assessment, strategy, and mission-driven programs. The role transforms complex information into clear, practical insights that strengthen content and scholarly communication initiatives and support participating organizations and academic institutions.
A major focus of the position is advancing open scholarship through the analysis of open-access business models for scholarly journals and the growing impact of open research infrastructure services. The Data and Assessment Strategist will also help design and manage a comprehensive assessment program across a portfolio of products and services, ensuring that program decisions are guided by evidence, transparency, shared values, and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Do
- Monitor current and emerging trends, products, services, and technologies within libraries and related professional communities.
- Stay informed by reviewing professional literature, attending conferences, monitoring discussion lists, building professional networks with vendors, library professionals, and consortia leaders, and participating in other relevant professional activities.
- Collect and analyze publication data to support ongoing scholarly journal package negotiations involving business models such as Read and Publish agreements.
- Prepare reports for participating libraries in Read and Publish journal groups and other open-access models to demonstrate the impact of their investments.
- Gather and analyze usage data for key open research infrastructure service programs, including ORCID and DataCite DOI services, to identify trends, adoption patterns, and potential gaps.
- Create, improve, and promote data visualizations that support programs and communicate information effectively to internal and external audiences.
- Analyze and interpret quantitative data from internal and external sources to support decision-making, strategic planning, program development, and the evaluation of products and services.
- Compile and organize data used in the preparation of annual budgets.
- Promote data transparency by developing dashboards, recurring reports, and other accessible information resources for staff through shared management tools.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to establish assessment methodologies, data collection techniques, documentation standards, and reporting processes needed to build a sustainable assessment program.
- Support a culture of continuous improvement by leading discussions about assessment results, helping teams interpret findings, and refining assessment methods over time.
- Translate complex data into clear, meaningful insights that help internal teams evaluate impact and establish future strategic priorities.
- Provide backup support to other members of the content and scholarly communication team as needed.
- Deliver presentations during group sessions as required.
- Perform additional responsibilities assigned by the immediate supervisor or department director.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Three to five years of experience in a library, higher education, publishing, or related environment with responsibilities involving assessment, data analysis, and reporting for general audiences.
- Proficiency in data collection, dashboard development, and data visualization using tools such as Excel, Tableau, Power BI, OpenRefine, or comparable software.
- Knowledge of current practices and issues affecting libraries, particularly in collections and scholarly communication.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, teaching, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong professional relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and complete work within established deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree in data science, statistics, library and information science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience using programming languages such as Python or R.
- Experience working with customer relationship management systems, content management systems, or library management systems.
- Demonstrated project management experience.
- Ability to adapt to changing environments and perform effectively under pressure while exercising tact, discretion, and sound judgment.
Work Arrangement
- This is a fully remote, U.S.-based position.
- The role primarily involves sedentary work and extended periods of sitting or standing.
- Regular communication and collaboration through Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other teleconferencing platforms are required.
- This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.
Travel
- Occasional travel is required several times per year for company events, professional development activities, meetings, and conferences.
